Many fans believe the Game of Thrones world is purely a work of fiction, like C.S. Lewis’, Narnia and J. R. R. Tolkien’s, Middle Earth, however much of the geographical settings and storylines comes direct from history.
Hadrian’s Wall (built during the Roman Empire) for instance, is inspiration for the colossal fortification that defends the Seven Kingdoms from the White Walkers.

Westeros is very similar in shape with the United Kingdom, and King’s Landing is positioned where you would find London on the map. The battle between the noble families replicates the War of the Roses, an English medieval civil war.
