A grey dire wolf in a white field is the sigil of House Stark and many fans believe these animals to be a mythical creation. However, dire wolves (although now extinct) were in fact, real, and roamed America over 10,000 years ago. They were about the same size as the modern gray wolf. Their extinction occurred soon after the appearance of humans in the New World.
