Hashima Island, Japan – This tiny coal mining island used to be populated with over 5,000 people, and it was fully functional between 1887 and 1974. When oil started to replace coal in Japan, Mitsubishi, the island’s owner, decided to officially close it. There are still many deserted homes with dusty TVs and telephones still intact.
